Without Grumbling and Complaining

Philippians 2:12-18 – [12] Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,  [13] for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. [14] Do all things without grumbling or questioning,  [15] that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,  [16] holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.  [17] Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all.  [18] Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.

Doing Great Things for God

What a text of Scripture this is. God, through Paul, tells the Philippians, and us, to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. He tells us that we can do this because God is working in us to will and to work for His good pleasure. We all want to walk worthy of our calling. What believer is there who doesn’t want to do something of significance, perhaps even something great, for God. “What great thing can we do for God?” we ask. And God replies in Philippians 2:14- “do everything without grumbling or questioning”. And we yell back “Is there anything ELSE we can do?” When we talk about doing great things for God is this what we think of? No. It is not. We think about miracles, conversions in the thousands, travelling the world and winning people to Jesus who have never heard of Him before, answering the riddles of the universe, standing up in the face of great persecution. Great things indeed – but not if they are done with grumbling and argument.

Doing everything without grumbling or questioning will give proof that you are children of God. That’s what verse 15 implies. Maybe this is why we gravitate to doing great exploits or hiding ourselves in ministry involvement. We can do those things and not have to prove that we are Christian at all.

Verse 15 says that doing without grumbling and complaining demonstrates us to be blameless and innocent. We are faced with a choice here. We can either stop our grumbling and complaining OR we can prove that we are children of God – but we cannot do both.

In the Midst of a Crooked and Twisted Generation

Note the phrase – “in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation among whom you shine as lights in the world …”

Matthew Henry put it this way –  “ When God raises up a good man in any place, he sets up a light in that place.” Dear ones, wherever you are, God has put you there as a light in the world. The question then becomes – where has God set us up?

Note the following things about what Paul says in this text about living as lights in a crooked and twisted generation.

a. Believers have always been called upon to live in the midst of great sin and unbelief. See the church at Pergamum in Revelation 2:13 – You think that was a Church Picnic? You think “righteous Lot” found it easy to live in Sodom?

b. We simply do not have to live the way that others do. We dwell in the midst of crookedness and twistedness – but that does not mean that we have to be crooked and twisted. We simply cannot blame others for our lack of spirituality. It is not their fault. It is not the fault of forces from without  pounding their way into our innocent hearts and minds. It is a matter of us inviting them in. This is the story that the Scriptures repeatedly communicate to us.

c. All believers are called to shine as lights in the world. The business of witness is not restricted to preachers, missionaries, evangelists, … .

d. In order to shine as lights there must be darkness. Our calling is not to hang around Christians all the time. It is to interact with the world in its sin and darkness and debauchery and live better. Do you work with liars? Be a person of truth. Do you have to listen to filthy language all the time? Speak with the golden tongue of the elevated saints of God. We think it is so cool to have the freedom to be as vulgar with our language as the rest of the world. No – do better than that.

e. Remember the purpose of shining as lights – Matthew 5:14-16 – “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.  [15] Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.  [16] In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Now – does the way you do your work, interact with your workmates, your school mates, your husband, wife children, parents – cause others to glorify your Father who is in heaven? And even if they do not – should they be able to from the way that you behave?

f. There are two ways in which we sin in relation to this matter
     (1) becoming so much like the world that there is no difference between us and             them
     (2) isolating ourselves so much that we never integrate with the culture at all.

g. Christians are not to isolate themselves from the world. We cannot be salt and light if we never interact with the world. The world will not become a part of our church life. We must become a part of theirs without becoming contaminated by it. This is not an option. This is our calling. Church programs are not meant to be replacements for the same type of programs that the world has only with a Christian twist. They are meant to help us shine as lights in the world. They are not meant to keep us so busy that we never interact with the world. They are not meant to replace friendships with non believers, … … . they are meant to help us remain faithful in those relationships so that we shine as lights in the world when we are in it. They are meant to help us remain not conformed to this world but transformed from it by the renewing of our minds. Our calling is to live “in the midst”.

And they are to do it without grumbling and complaining.

Take it Easy

Luke 4:9-11 - And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,  [10] for it is written,
” ‘He will command his angels concerning you,
        to guard you,’
 [11] and
” ‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ “
Darryl Dash, pastor, church planter, good friend, and all round great guy, had a post on his blog the other day that is well worth reading. It is called “Satan Might Do Anything to Prevent You from Suffering”. It opens with this:

“The third and last temptation Jesus faced in the wilderness, according to Luke, was the temptation to take the easy road.” There’s a great quote for pastors from Spurgeon as well.

God’s Power for His Children

Excerpts from the message preached at our church on Sunday, July 8.
Col. 1:9-14 – And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,  [10] so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.  [11] May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy,  [12] giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.  [13] He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,  [14] in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
God’s Desire for His Children – Strengthened with all power
a. This obviously cannot mean that God gives us all His power (although, listening to some TV preachers you might get that impression). No, it simply means all the power that is required for accomplishing what God wants for us. He who calls and commands also equips and enables
b. Remember that verse 11 is giving us the results in our lives when we have the prayer of verses 9&10 answered. You want to know why you are not as you should be? You do not know God as well as you should. You are not growing as you should in spiritual wisdom and understanding … . Verses 9&10 are a prayer. Power comes from asking God for what He wants for us. The prayer is not “Give me power”. The prayer is “Help me to know you better” etc. And the power is what God gives us as part of the answer.

God’s Provision for His People – According to His glorious Might
a. God wants us to be strengthened and He gives us what we need in order to achieve that. He is the power enabling us to be strengthened.
b. Then what in the world is wrong with us? God desires it for us. God provides it for us. Why don’t we seem to have it?  Well, that would take a long time to answer. Go through this room and get a great many different answers. “Where is the power?”
c. But allow this as an answer to the question. If God’s desire for us is to be strengthened with all power and God has provided this power in accordance with His glorious might, then the reason we do not have what He wants for us and has enabled us to have is:
i. We do not know what it is
ii. We do not want it, when we find out what it is
God’s goal for His people
a. God wants us to be strengthened with all power according to His glorious might. What great plans God must have for us. What earth shattering exploits has He planned for us if only we would get our act together? What are we about to see in this text that we can accomplish for God, by His power, for His glory, as we get filled with the Holy Spirit and let go and let God?
b. Well, what does the text say? “For all endurance, and patience with joy”.
    i. Endurance
    ii. Patience
    iii. Joy
Well that is not what we thought it would be is it? That is not even what some people believe it to be, even as they read it and hear right now. It can’t be that. We are not strengthened with all power according to His glorious might just so that we can endure and be patient and be joyful. Yes, dear ones we are. This is where the real power of God is needed. And this is where the real power of God is demonstrated. Not in the great accomplishments as we think of great accomplishments. Not in performing great miracles (although who will deny that these qualities lived out in the power of God is not a great miracle?) Not in the exhibition of great gifts. Not in the great numbers that are converted from our preaching and witnessing. Not in all the things we normally think of when we say that we want God to give us power.

Endurance – “endurance is the grace to bear up under, the bravery of perseverance in the performance of one’s God given task in spite of every hardship and trial”.
    a. Why can’t we be like those churches that come up with a vision and “presto” there it is doing great things in the community, in the lives of others, in the conversion of sinners … ? Why do things happen so slowly, after so much opposition, after so many questions, after failure and abandonment and difficulty? Why can’t we just come up with something, just once, that works the first time round?  Because that would be bad for us. It would make us spiritual infants. It is not the way that God works. If some churches are in that mold, then let’s pray that it doesn’t ruin them.
    b. So then the power of God at work in us is when He gives us the ability to not give up.
      i. when we are tempted – Hebrews 12:1
ii. when we are opposed – Luke 21:10-19
iii. when we suffer in various ways – I Peter 1:6
iv. when it would be easier to do what is not God pleasing
Patience – “It refers to the self-restraint which does not hastily retaliate a wrong.” To be long tempered (Vine).
a. You want to show the power of God at work? Be long tempered.
b. See I Thessalonians 5:14 – This patience is to be lavished on the idle, the fainthearted, the weak.
With joy
    a. Ah, we can show patience and most of the time we do not have a choice about the things that we have to endure. But Paul is not content to say just to show patience and endurance. We are to show them with joy.
    b. This is what the Holy Spirit produces – Galatians 5:22
    c. Joy in difficulty comes from
      i. Identity with Christ – Acts 5:41
ii. Knowing our hope – Hebrews 12:1-2, I Peter 1:6
iii. The Word of God – I John 1:4
      iv. Obedience – John 15:11
      v. Christian fellowship – I Thessalonians 2:19
But is this all the Christian life is? Is all we do is go around enduring and being patient with others? Is that the message we are supposed to take away from this text? Of course not. But we should take this away – the Christian attitude, traits, behaviour, we see here in this text are the ones that must be in full working order as we go about doing what God has called us to do. Talent is trumped by character. We get so impressed with ability do we not? So what is the greatest thing you will ever do? What great thing above all other things has God told us to do? Love Him. Love Him how? With all our hearts. Love one another? How? As we love ourselves. This does not mean that talent is of no use. God gives us the gifts we have for His glory to be used in the world for the world’s betterment, the church’s betterment and the salvation of the lost. But if all we can do is repair things, teach, clean, … and not also show patience, and endurance and do so with joy – then we are nothing but a hindrance in the work of the kingdom.

Theology and Art

Here is a panel discussion with Don Carson and Fred Zaspel. It’s a long video and I encourage you to watch the whole thing, which I have not done yet. But the opening illustration by Carson is only about four minutes long and is really worth listening to, especially if you have ever questioned whether your little faith is really saving faith.

And then there is this. Kinda makes you wish you hadn’t spent your music lesson money on comic books. It even can contribute to wanting to give the Gospel to people. And it really makes a believer thankful to our great creative, true art loving, God of beauty, harmony, and encouragement.

In the Hands of a Loving Father

Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Here is a brief article written by RC Sproul Jr. regarding a recent medical emergency with his mentally disabled daughter on the heels of the death of his wife,  and the love of our  sovereign God. Great, humbling, soul searching stuff.

An excerpt:

“… I know that the immediate hardship I have been through this week is strong plant food for spiritual fruit. I trust Him to break my heart for the sake of making me more like Him. I trust in turn that He loves my little girl with a perfect love, that she, because she is my spiritual better, feels His loving arms holding her every day, in sickness and in health.”

Render to God

Luke 20:19-26 – The scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him at that very hour, for they perceived that he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people.  [20] So they watched him and sent spies, who pretended to be sincere, that they might catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor.  [21] So they asked him, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and show no partiality, but truly teach the way of God.  [22] Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?”  [23] But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them,  [24] “Show me a denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar’s.”  [25] He said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”  [26] And they were not able in the presence of the people to catch him in what he said, but marveling at his answer they became silent
Render to God

1. The reason we render to Caesar is because we render to God. Our obedience to Caesar is because we love God and love for God is marked by obedience to God. We do not render to Caesar because we believe that he is always right. We do not render to him because he is always right. We do not render to him because we voted for him. We do not render to him because we believe he will bring us back to being a moral nation. We render to Him because God has ordained him into power and God tells us to be subject to the ruling powers.
2. All governments are ordained of God. Romans 13 and I Peter 3 are not only valid for social democracies. Chinese Christians, and Indonesian Christians and Saudi Christians have the same Bible that we do. They have the same Bible that Christians in the first century Roman Empire had and that was not a liberal social democracy either.
3. Everything is God’s. When we say “render to Caesar” we are not saying that there are some things that are God’s and some things that are not. We are saying that God has given certain responsibilities to Caesar. He should do them and we should submit to them.
4. The Scriptures tell us what to do when the laws of the land conflict with the laws of God.
a. Acts 5:29 – The verse we always gravitate to. “We must obey God rather than men.”
b. Joseph was in charge of all of Potiphar’s house. He was climbing up the political ladder. But when tempted to violate the will of God he endured prison instead of disobeying.
c. Daniel was a from the upper crust of his society. He had lived in relative luxury for all of his life. But he would not keep that lifestyle at the expense of violating the food laws that God had given him. Some 70 years later he prayed at his window in open view of all when such prayer had been made illegal. In fact, prayer was made illegal because his enemies knew that the only way to get rid of Daniel was to make righteousness a crime. Do we live such lives that the only way to get us guilty of a crime is to make righteousness illegal?
5. So where does this leave us? How should the church conduct itself in the 21st century in the face of godless rulers, godless laws and godless behaviour? Can we first of all remind ourselves that the church was founded in the midst of one of the most godless empires the world has ever known? It was not always openly hostile to the church, but it was not friends of it either. The church that began with 3000 souls in the year 35 grew to become over 3,000,000 by the time of the first conversion of an emperor 300 years later. The church grew, not through having Christians elected to the senate or to being a governor. It grew, not through petitioning the governing authorities for laws sympathetic to the faith. It grew, not by having prayers in the schools, or having Bibles distributed in the schools, or through blue laws or banning gay parades … . It grew through the obedience of the church, despite all its problems and sins, to the commands of Christ. It grew because the church loved God and loved its neighbour. It grew because they lived differently from the world they lived in. It grew because they submitted themselves to the governing authorities and were citizens who did not foment rebellion, because they had a higher agenda – the worship of Jesus Christ and the conversion of their neighbours.

Rendering to Caesar

Here are some excerpts from the message preached last Sunday (July 1, Canada Day) at our church by Pastor Davis.
1. It is God who tells us to render unto Caesar. Human governments are ordained of God and its citizens have an obligation to submit to it as an act of obedience to God. Christians are law abiding citizens. Romans 13:1.
2. Subjection to the governing authorities is not inconsistent with reverence to God.
3. We do not just render to Caesar in things that we agree with. Jesus has been asked about paying taxes. And He affirms that taxes should be paid. If believers in Jesus’ day were to pay taxes to a godless emperor who would use tax money for purposes that we would never spend our money on, how dare we think that we should not pay taxes because it may be used for ungodly purposes. Our duty is to pay our taxes. If the government uses it improperly, that is not our fault.
4. It is God who raises up kings and deposes them – Jeremiah 27:5-7; Isaiah 45:1-7
a. Do not fall prey to the lie from the devil that evil governments are established by Satan and good ones by God. Find that anywhere in the Bible – you won’t. God establishes the powers that be.
5. Jeremiah 29:4-7
a. We are exiles in this world. But that does not mean that we will not live to make our world, our country, our province, our city –  a better place.
b. What city does Jeremiah 29:4 speak about? Babylon… Followers of Jesus Christ are not home yet. We are exiles, or as Peter says to those he writes – chosen exiles – I Peter 1:1,17 and then see I Peter 2:11.
c. But even though we are exiles here, we are here, and God calls us not to abandon the good of the culture in which we live but to work for its good. Yes, the governing authorities are not ruling for the glory of God. Yes, they bring in laws that deny God and His will. Yes, they will be judged and cast into everlasting punishment. But do not forget dear ones that this is where God has put us and we are to seek the welfare of our city. That has nothing to do with what your politics are or who you vote for. It has to do with who is your true King.
d. Remember that Daniel was an official to godless Kings. Joseph was Prime Minister over pagan Egypt. And last week we considered the prophet Obadiah who feared the Lord greatly while he was working for the worst King Israel had up to that point. And God has put us where we are and when we are. He has put us under the Caesar we currently find ourselves. And He has put us here for the good of our city and our culture. To hide in our little church conclaves is simply not an option.
Tomorrow – rendering to God.
